Dad profits from app

Matthew Nifield, 33, is making good money out of the App Store. Originally from Cardiff, Nifield is now living in Silicon Valley in California, profiting from an idea inspired on his twin children.

He narrates how his baby daughters could not sleep, and when failing to find a White Noise mobile programme that could help his kids rest, he decided to create one and put it on Apple’s App store.

Nifield has a BSc in software engineering from the University of Glamorgan and is now earning an estimate of £5,000. His concept, White Noise Ambience, is available both for iPhone and iPad. It took him around two months and a half to develop both free and paid iPhone versions (4 and 6 weeks respectively).

Time-wise, Nifield spent around 12 hours, working whenever his children were asleep or playing, as he is a stay-at-home-dad, apart from an App maker.

How does it work? Nifield says,  “It plays relaxing sounds for you, you can make playlists or pick your favourites, it also has a LED clock”.

White Noise Ambience was officially released in May as an iPhone application, and in September for the iPad, with the US, Canada, Hong Kong and the UK as main markets.
